Miller-Gee wins West Penn Women's Amateur

Katie Miller-Gee won her second Mid-Am tournament within a week on Monday by running away from the pack at Fox Chapel.

The 40-year-old Hempfield Area grad, a three-time PIAA 3A champion, and wife of Oakmont Country Club pro Devin Gee, shot 78-74, to finish at 6-over par 152 in the West Penn Women’s Amateur. Miller-Gee won the Pa. State Mid-Am last week at Valley Brook Country Club.

Hunker native Oliva Zambruno was second, shooting a 14-over 160.

This was the inaugural Mid-Am sponsored by the WPGA.

“I felt like I played better than my score on the first 18,” Miller-Gee said. “I had a tough time with the greens. This is truly one of my favorite courses. This is a gem.

“I kind of enjoy the Mid-Am golf thing. I expect this championship to grow.”

Emily Holzopfel of Williams Golf and Country Club in Weirton, W.Va. won the 17^th Women’s Amateur.

Caroline McConnell of the Club at Nevillewood was second and had a chance at tying Holzopfel with a par on No. 18, but she just missed the putt by inches.

Holzopfel, who played college golf at Wheeling and is coaching golf at Fairmont State, shot a 5-under 68 during round one. She shot a 77 on the back nine.

“I felt good through 27 holes,” Holzopfel said. “But I made a couple mistakes and had a couple bad breaks during the final nine holes.”

McConnell shot a 74 during the first 18 and a 72 on the second 18 for a 146.

Mya Morgan and Grace Windfelder each shot a 150.

The Senior Amateur winner was Butler’s Jane Wymer, who edged Steph Urban of Lawrence Park, in a playoff. Both finished 3-over 76.

The Super Senior winner was Nemacolin Country Club’s Kathleen Smith, who edged Longue Vue’s Stephanie Dewar an Hee Soo Kim of Edgewood in a playoff. The trio of ladies shot a 15-over 88.
