Minkah Fitzpatrick plays with broken hand, but Steelers lose Elandon Roberts, Isaac Seumalo
Minkah Fitzpatrick was showing off the palms of each of his hands to a team staffer in the Pittsburgh Steelers locker room after Sunday’s game.
Observers perhaps were aghast. After all, Fitzpatrick played more than half of the 24-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals with a broken hand.
“They casted me up during one of the delays,” the All Pro safety said. “I couldn’t grab with it, but I was able to still play.”
Fitzpatrick said his play was not affected “too much” by the fracture, which he said occurred while making a tackle in the second quarter. But Fitzpatrick said he did not realize the extent of his injury until later. Coach Mike Tomlin said the extended halftime break because of a weather delay helped give training staff enough time to cast Fitzpatrick’s hand.
After the game, Fitzpatrick did not have a cast on. He said he will be able to play in Thursday’s home game against the New England Patriots.
“I’ll be fine,” he said. “We’ll wrap it up, club it up like we did today.”
Roberts, Seumalo do not return
Two other veteran starters who suffered injuries during Sunday’s game were not so fortunate in regards to being able to return to it. Inside linebacker Elandon Roberts suffered a groin injury and left guard Isaac Seumalo a shoulder ailment. Neither played during the second half.
Tomlin did not provide any additional details on the extent of the injuries to either, nor their potential availability for Thursday’s game.
Veteran Nate Herbig replaced Seumalo. At inside linebacker, Roberts’ absence was compounded by the season-ending injuries suffered last month by Kwon Alexander and Cole Holcomb. Mark Robinson got the bulk of the additional playing time in Roberts’ stead Sunday.
