QB Tanner Morgan among undrafted free agents reportedly signed by Steelers
A record-setting quarterback and a fullback named “Monte the Mullet” highlight the group of rookie free agents reportedly signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers after the draft ended.
Five-year University of Minnesota starting quarterback Tanner Morgan will become the third quarterback on the Steelers’ roster headed into organized team activities. According to the NFL Network, Morgan signed as an undrafted free agent after the Steelers — somewhat surprisingly — did not take a passer in the seven-round draft.

Starter Kenny Pickett and veteran backup Mitch Trubisky remain the only quarterbacks on the team. The Steelers have always had four quarterbacks for summer workouts and training camp.
Rookie minicamp is set to begin in two weeks, and that often is a time another young arm is signed to the 90-man roster.
Morgan’s Minnesota program career records include starts (47), wins (33) and completion percentage (62.2%). His 2019 season featured Golden Gophers records for passing yards, touchdown passes, completion percentage and more.

Monte Pottebaum was another early-reported undrafted free agent signee by the Steelers. According to the NFL Network, the Steelers gave Pottebaum a $10,000 signing bonus.
“Monte The Mullet” is a converted linebacker who at 6-0, 210 pounds eventually became Iowa’s first-team fullback.
Speedy (4.4 in the 40-yard dash) but diminutive (5-9, 170) running back and return specialist Jordan Byrd has also joined the Steelers, according to a report by Houston’s NBC television affiliate.

Byrd three times was honored as an all-conference return specialist in the Mountain West (2021 and 2022 for kickoffs and 2022 for punts). Byrd had a kickoff return for a touchdown each of the past three seasons for San Diego State, and in 2022 had a 66-yard punt return for a touchdown.
He also had 12 career college touchdowns with a 4.9-yard per-carry average on 275 carries.
The Steelers will not officially announce any signings until Sunday at the earliest.
