Minor league report: Penguins drop season-opener to Checkers
Forward Emil Bemstrom had a goal and an assist for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, who lost their season opener, 7-6, to the Charlotte Checkers at Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.
Defensemen Sebastian Aho and Nate Clurman as well as forwards Ville Koivunen and Sam Poulin all recorded two assists for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton while goaltender Filip Larsson made 31 saves on 38 shots in the defeat.

The Penguins’ next game is a road contest against the Springfield Thunderbirds on Sunday, 3:05 p.m.
Forward Jared Wescott scored two regulation goals for the Wheeling Nailers in a 5-4 preseason loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, W.Va.
Defenseman Zachary Massicotte had a goal and two assists for Wheeling while goaltender Jaxon Castor was charged with the loss after making seven saves on nine shots in regulation and overtime then allowing two goals on two shots in the shootout.
The Nailers are scheduled to open the regular season with a road contest against the Maine Mariners on Friday, 7:15 p.m.
