Minor league report: Penguins dropped by Comets

Goaltender Sergei Murashov made 17 saves on 19 shots for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 3-1 loss to the Utica Comets at the Utica (N.Y.) Memorial Auditorium on Saturday.

The result dropped Murashov’s record to 5-2-0.

Forward Aidan McDonough scored the lone goal for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (8-2-0-0).

Defenseman Daniel Laatsch, a seventh-round draft pick (No. 215 overall) of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2021, made his American Hockey League debut. Opening the contest on the left side of the Penguins’ third pairing, Laatsch recorded one shot.

Highlights:

The Penguins’ next game is a road contest against the Rochester Americans on Friday, 7:05 p.m.

Goaltender Maxim Pavelenko made 24 saves on 26 shots for the Wheeling Nailers in their home opener, a 3-2 win against the Norfolk Admirals at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, W.Va.

The result lifted Pavlenko’s record to 2-1-0.

Defensemen Bogdans Hodass and Brent Johnson as well as forward Max Graham all scored goals for Wheeling (3-1-0-0) while forward Matthew Querica contributed two assists.
