Minor league report: Penguins fall to Checkers

Goaltender Joel Blomqvist made 35 saves on 39 shots for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 5-2 loss to the Charlotte Checkers at Mohegan Arena in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.

The result dropped Blomqvist’s record to 6-4-3.

Forwards Gabe Klassen and Aidan McDonough scored goals for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (27-12-2-2).

The Penguins’ next game is a home contest against the Syracuse Crunch on Jan. 31, 6:05 p.m.


Goaltender Taylor Gauthier made 15 saves on 17 shots over 37:55 of ice time for the Wheeling Nailers in a 5-2 loss to the Reading Royals at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, W.Va.

The result dropped Gauthier’s record to 7-3-0. He replaced goaltender Maxim Pavlenko at the start of the second period after Pavlenko made four saves on six shots in the opening 20 minutes.

Forwards Brayden Edwards and Matthew Quercia each scored goals for Wheeling (26-10-1-0).

The Nailers’ next game is a home contest against the Fort Wayne Komets on Sunday, 4:10 p.m.
