Mitch Keller returns to Triple-A to make room for Trevor Williams

Pirates pitcher Trevor Williams plays with a hacky sack by the bullpen Tuesday, June 18, 2019, before a game against the Tigers.

The return of Trevor Williams to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ starting rotation Wednesday means the end — for now — of Mitch Keller’s time with the team.

Williams was reinstated from the 10-day injured list after being out since May 16 with a right side strain. He will start Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers at PNC Park.

To make roster room for Williams, Keller was optioned back to Triple-A Indianapolis for the second time this season. In three starts with the Pirates, Keller is 0-1 with a 10.50 ERA while striking out 15 batters and giving up 21 hits in 12 innings.

Williams has made nine starts this season, with a 2-1 record and 3.33 ERA. With Williams, Joe Musgrove, Chris Archer and Steven Brault manning the rotation and upcoming off days Thursday and Monday, the Pirates won’t need a fifth starter until Jordan Lyles is ready to come off the injured list, possibly next week.
