Mock NFL Draft predicts Steelers take Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor
The only quarterback who definitely won’t fall Thursday night in prime time is Joe Burrow.
Burrow’s is the first name we will hear regardless if the Bengals select him or a team such as the Dolphins pays a king’s ransom for the first overall pick.
The situation remains fluid for Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert and Jordan Love.
Durability concerns could tank Tagovailoa’s draft stock. Herbert’s consistency issues and struggles with pressure could hurt his. Love’s subpar junior season might cause him to slip.
Here’s a prediction of the first round of the NFL Draft, plus who the Steelers take in Round 2:
First round
1. Cincinnati — Joe Burrow, QB, LSU
A team would have to offer a king’s ransom for the Bengals to even consider moving this pick. The only team with that much draft capital is the Dolphins.
2. Washington — Chase Young, Edge, Ohio St.
It is hard to imagine coaches such as Ron Rivera and Jack Del Rio, with their defensive backgrounds, would pass on Young.
3. Detroit — Jeffrey Okudah, CB, Ohio St.
Since 1999, 10 cornerbacks from Ohio State have been drafted in the first round. Okudah is a blue-chip athlete who likely will have an island named after him at the next level.
4. N.Y. Giants — Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa
It’s a hard pass on Isaiah Simmons. Taking an offensive lineman here is an investment in the futures of Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley.
5. Miami — Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama
The Dolphins passed on Drew Brees because of fears he wouldn’t recover fully from shoulder surgery. It would be another franchise-defining mistake if they pass on Tagovailoa for the same reason.
6. L.A. Chargers — Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville
The Chargers decide to solve their left-tackle problem, allowing Bryan Bulaga to slide back to right tackle (his natural position). You can’t teach Becton’s size (6-foot-7, 369), and he is surprisingly nimble, especially as a run blocker.
7. Carolina — Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson
The Panthers have focused most of their attention on offense during free agency. They can restock their defense during the draft. The only defensive position Simmons is ill-equipped to play is nose tackle.
8. Arizona — Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn
Brown is a run-away train who never wears down. A mediocre performance at the combine could lower his draft stock a bit (but it shouldn’t). He won’t fall past the Cardinals.
9. Jacksonville — C.J. Henderson, CB, Florida
If a team like the Raiders want Henderson, they will need to leapfrog the Jags.
10. Cleveland — Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia
The Browns added right tackle Jack Conklin, but they need more. Thomas is a big, powerful, athletic lineman with springy footwork and quick hands who is a dynamic closer in the run and pass game.
11. N.Y. Jets — Jedrick Wills, OL, Alabama
This pick is an offensive tackle or wide receiver. Wills is an upgrade at every offensive line position except center.
12. Las Vegas — CeeDee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma
The Biletnikoff Award finalist averaged 21.4 yards per reception in 2019 as a primary target and adds extra value as a punt returner.
13. San Francisco — Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama
Jeudy and coach Kyle Shanahan’s scheme are a perfect match. He is a route technician who has elite speed (a rare combination).
14. Tampa Bay — D’Andre Swift, RB, Georgia
The Buccaneers miss out on a top tackle, so they gift Tom Brady another weapon. Swift is a shifty back able to bounce it outside or handle the rigors of running between the tackles.
15. Denver — Henry Ruggs, WR, Alabama
Ruggs would pair nicely with Courtland Sutton.
16. Atlanta — K’Lavon Chaisson, Edge, LSU
Chaisson is a solid Plan B if Henderson is off the board. Durability concerns mask a high ceiling. Elite speed and athleticism make him a factor in the pass rush and coverage.
17. Dallas — Cesar Ruiz, OL, Michigan
If the Cowboys miss out on a top cornerback here, a trade down for Ruiz would be in play. Travis Frederick’s retirement left a gaping hole in a once-dominant offensive line.
18. Miami — Josh Jones, OT, Houston
What’s the point of drafting a franchise quarterback if you can’t protect him?
19. Las Vegas — Trevon Diggs, CB, Alabama
Coach Jon Gruden and GM Mike Mayock have yet to solve the riddle that is the Raiders secondary. Diggs features the size (6-1, 205), strength and ball skills to be kryptonite for big targets in the NFL.
20. Jacksonville — Javon Kinlaw, DT, South Carolina
The Jaguars are in the middle of an overhaul of their defensive line. Kinlaw is a physical specimen who wreaks havoc on the pocket with a menacing bull-rush.
21. Philadelphia — Justin Jefferson, WR, LSU
The Eagles wide receiver corps is in shambles. The inconsistent Nelson Agholor signed with the Raiders, and DeSean Jackson isn’t getting any younger (or healthier). A surprising 4.43 40-yard dash in Indy likely elevated Jefferson’s draft stock.
22. Minnesota — Kristian Fulton, CB, LSU
Trae Waynes signed with Cincinnati, and the Vikings released Xavier Rhodes. Fulton is an elite athlete who was the top cornerback prospect coming out of high school in 2016.
23. New England — Patrick Queen, LB, LSU
The Patriots didn’t reach or trade up for their last franchise quarterback. Queen is an elite athlete who showcased the three-down ability to chase, cover and tackle, despite being only a one-year starter.
24. New Orleans — Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon
You can’t question Herbert’s arm talent or physical tools. However, his ability to process the entire field is still a work in progress despite great showings during Senior Bowl week and at the NFL Combine.
25. Minnesota — A.J. Epenesa, Edge, Iowa
Everson Griffen’s departure makes this a necessary pick. There are plenty of wide receivers left on the board.
26. Miami — Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama
McKinney is talented enough to play every position in the defensive backfield. He is physical in run support and athletic enough to make plays in coverage.
27. Seattle — Yetur Gross-Matos, Edge, Penn St.
Gross-Matos features prototypical size (6-5, 266), athleticism and was very productive as a two-year starter (17 1/2 sacks and 35 tackles for loss). A NFL strength program will help him build power.
28. Baltimore — Kenneth Murray, LB, Oklahoma
The Ravens finally replace C.J. Mosley. Murray is an elite athlete capable of patrolling sideline-to-sideline. He also is effective in coverage or blitzing.
29. Tennessee — Ezra Cleveland, OT, Boise St.
The Titans need to replace Jack Conklin. Cleveland could sneak into the first round.
30. Green Bay — Brandon Aiyuk, WR, Arizona St.
Davante Adams was the Packers’ only effective wideout in 2019. Aiyuk is a run-after-the-catch dynamo.
31. San Francisco — Noah Igbinoghene, CB, Auburn
The 49ers likely will trade this pick to the highest bidder, considering they won’t be on the clock again until the fifth round. Otherwise, Richard Sherman isn’t getting any younger.
32. Kansas City — Zach Baun, OLB, Wisconsin
The champs need an infusion of talent at linebacker and a running mate for Frank Clark. Will a diluted drug test sample from the NFL combine cause the versatile edge rusher to slip out of the first round?
Second round
33. Cincinnati — Julian Okwara, Edge, Notre Dame, Sr.
34. Indianapolis from Washington — Tee Higgins, WR, Clemson, Jr.
T.Y. Hilton and Higgins would give Philip Rivers a pair of dynamic receivers. Top needs: WR, Edge, CB, QB, K
35. Detroit — Neville Gallimore, DL, Oklahoma, Sr.
36. N.Y. Giants — Grant Delpit, S, LSU, Jr.
37. L.A. Chargers — Jordan Love, QB, Utah St., Jr.
38. Carolina — Jeff Gladney, CB, TCU, Sr.
39. Miami — Grant Delpit, S, LSU, Jr.
40. Houston from Arizona — Ross Blacklock, DT, TCU, Jr.
41. Cleveland — Jeremy Chinn, S, Southern Illinois, Sr.
42. Jacksonville — Ashtyn Davis, S, California, Sr.
43. Chicago from Las Vegas — Lloyd Cushenberry III, OL, LSU, Jr.
44. Indianapolis — Cole Kmet, TE, Notre Dame, Jr.
45. Tampa Bay — Lucas Niang, OT, TCU, Sr.
46. Denver — Jaylon Johnson, CB, Utah, Jr.
47. Atlanta — A.J. Terrell, CB, Clemson, Jr.
48. N.Y. Jets — Jalen Reagor, WR, TCU, Jr.
49. Steelers — Jonathan Taylor, RB Wisconsin, Jr.
Taylor has been a game-changer with elite vision since his freshman season. His athleticism compares favorably to Barkley, but most focus on his elite production (6,174 rushing yards and 55 total touchdowns in three seasons).
50. Chicago — Antoine Winfield Jr., S, Minnesota, So.
51. Dallas — Damon Arnette, CB, Ohio St., Sr.
52. L.A. Rams — Terrell Lewis, Edge, Alabama, Jr.
The Rams need to fill voids in their pass rush left by Dante Fowler Jr. and Clay Matthews. Top needs: OL, Edge, LB, DB, RB
53. Philadelphia — Malik Harrison, LB, Ohio St., Sr.
54. Buffalo — Josh Uche, Edge, Michigan, Sr.
55. Baltimore from Atlanta — Laviska Shenault Jr., WR, Colorado, Jr.
56. Miami from New Orleans — Robert Hunt, OL, Louisiana-Lafayette, Sr.
57. L.A. Rams from Houston — Austin Jackson, OT, USC, Jr.
The Rams offensive line needs an overhaul if the offense hopes to return to its lofty status of 2018. Top needs: OL, Edge, LB, DB, RB
58. Minnesota — K.J. Hamler, WR, Penn St., So.
59. Seattle — Denzel Mims, WR, Baylor, Sr.
