Pennsylvania Shotokan Karate Club athlete Jared Smith earned a bronze medal in April at the World Karate Federation K1 Series A event in Vancouver, Canada.

A Franklin Regional grad and current student at Carnegie Mellon, Smith finished third in the 75-kilogram division for kumite fighting.

He competed against martial artists from Canada, Croatia, Japan and France.

Smith is coached by Dustin Baldis, Team USA coach and Pennsylvania Shotokan Karate Club’s chief instructor. Baldis also coached Rey Chinen (2019 Junior World Kata Champion) to gold in his first competition since 2019. Team USA’s Sklyar and Cirrus Lingl both took silver in the female minus-68 and plus-68 kilogram kumite divisions.

USA Karate is the national governing body for karate in the U.S. and is a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee.
