New defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi 'limited' in 1st training camp workout with Steelers
Larry Ogunjobi is being eased into his first training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He mostly was a bystander Tuesday when the Steelers conducted their first workout at Saint Vincent College and was listed by coach Mike Tomlin as a limited participant.
One reason is the ankle injury the 28-year-old defensive lineman sustained in a January playoff game while playing for the Cincinnati Bengals. It required surgery.
The other is that Ogunjobi didn’t sign with the Steelers until June 23.
“We’re just getting to know him,” Tomlin said. “He’s coming off surgery. He’s ready to go, but we’ll manage him and proceed with caution because not only is he dealing with an injury, but he’s new to us.
“That requires a little bit of management.”
When healthy, Ogunjobi is expected to fill the spot on the defensive line created by Stephon Tuitt’s retirement. Chris Wormley, who started 14 games last season, took many of the first-team reps in the opening workout alongside defensive tackle Cameron Heyward.
Safety/special teams standout Miles Killebrew left practice early with a pectoral injury, and rookie linebacker T.D. Moultry didn’t finish because of cramps.
Also not practicing were nose tackle Tyson Alualu, who is on the PUP list, and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, who is on the non-football injury list after he hurt his wrist falling from a bike while on vacation.
