New Steelers tight end Nick Vannett: ‘I see this as a great opportunity for myself’

Word of his trade from the Seattle Seahawks broke Tuesday night. It was made official Wednesday morning, and the following day, Nick Vannett moved across the country and settled into UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

“It’s been a crazy 24 hours,” the Pittsburgh Steelers’ newest tight end said, “but it’s part of the business. I see this as a great opportunity for myself, and I am here to help this team in any way I can.”

Vannett was acquired for a 2020 fifth-round draft pick. He takes the roster spot of former No. 2 tight end, Xavier Grimble, and likely fills that role behind starter Vance McDonald. Grimble was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, and McDonald is questionable to play in Monday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals because of a shoulder injury.

“They, obviously, believe in me, bringing me in here,” Vannett said, “and I’ll do everything I can to put this team in a good position to win.”
