The Pittsburgh Pirates placed second baseman Nick Gonzales on the 10-day injured list Friday with a non-displaced fracture in his left ankle.

Gonzales, who hit a home run Thursday in the loss to the Miami Marlins, originally injured the ankle Sunday when he hit a foul ball off his ankle in a spring training game against the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin, Fla.

In a corresponding move, the Pirates recalled infielder/outfielder Enmanuel Valdez from Triple-A Indianapolis. Valdez, 26, was acquired from the Boston Red Sox on Dec. 15 in exchange for minor league right-hander Joe Vogatsky.

Valdez was a member of the Red Sox’s Opening Day roster last season and played in 76 games over four stints with the team.

He has made 112 career appearances (100 starts) at second base, three (one start) at third base, one at shortstop and one in left field.

Veteran Adam Frazier will start at second base Friday in the Pirates’ game against the Marlins.
