No. 1 Penn State wrestling team falls to No. 6 Arizona State

The Arizona State wrestling team received a forfeit win at 184 pounds Friday, which helped the Sun Devils upset No. 1 Penn State, 19-18, in a dual match in Tempe, Ariz.

The loss snapped Penn State’s streak of 60 dual wins that dated to the end of the 2014-15 season.

The sixth-ranked Sun Devils (5-0) got another key victory from senior and Franklin Regional graduate Josh Maruca, who edged Nittany Lions sophomore Jarod Verkleeren (Hempfield/Belle Vernon), 5-4, at 149 pounds.

Penn State’s No. 1-ranked and two-time NCAA champion Vincenzo Joseph (Central Catholic) defeated Franklin Regional grad Josh Shields, 7-4, at 165.

The Nittany Lions (1-1) also got a victory from Roman Bravo-Young at 132, a technical fall win by Nick Lee at 141, a major decision from Mark Hall at 174 and a win from Anthony Cassar at 285.
