Feeling undervalued and underused, Jack Salopek decided the time was right to leave Western Michigan.

A growing disconnect led the redshirt sophomore quarterback to go the transfer portal route. Salopek, a Norwin graduate, announced Tuesday he will seek to play for another program.

This season was a see-saw for the 6-foot-3, 186-pound Salopek, who believed he was QB1 at the start of the season.

“After winning the job again this camp I had a fairly solid first two games of the year,” Salopek said. “But after our second game, our coaching staff decided we needed to make a change at quarterback. Then, after multiple conversations with my coaches, I could tell that we were not on the same page and I did not see myself being someone who would be in their plans for the future.”

Salopek, the all-time leading passer in Westmoreland County history (6,150 yards, 40 TDs) played in six games this season, completing 42 of 63 passes for 316 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

That came after he started seven times last season and tallied 1,287 yards and seven TDs. He made his first start at Michigan State and threw for 193 yards.

For his career, he is 149 of 280 for 1,621 yards with eight TDs and 13 interceptions.

Salopek has been at Western Michigan for four years. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

“All ever wanted to be was the best quarterback to ever put on a Bronco uniform,” Salopek posted to fans in X. “I am sorry that I fell short of that.”
