Norwin grad out to make an impression with Washington Wild Things
The Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League added a local name to the roster recently, announcing the signing of former Norwin and Pitt standout Connor Perry.
Perry, who most recently played in the minor leagues for the Low-A Lakeland Flying Tigers, also spent the 2019 season with the Gulf Coast Tigers of the Rookie League.
The outfielder hit .227 in 43 career games with two home runs, 16 RBIs, 20 stolen bases and 27 runs.
Perry, a 28th-round pick of the Detroit Tigers in 2019, orchestrated a summer wooden bat league, the AAB, at Green Tree Park last year after the covid-19 pandemic shut down the minor leagues.
“I want to help the team win, first off,” Perry said of his new digs. “But, hopefully, this leads me to getting back into the MLB.”
Perry made a fast impact, delivering a three-run triple only hours after his signing on June 15. He went 2 for 4 in a 13-5 series-opening win at Florence (Ky.).
“It was awesome,” he said of his debut. “The Wild Things took great care of me, from the GM down to management. I was excited to help the team so quickly.”
Perry spent two years at Lackawanna, a junior college in Scranton, before joining Pitt. At Lackawanna, he was a two-time all-region player who had more than 100 hits to go with 35 stolen bases, 50 walks and 35 RBIs.
At Pitt, Perry was an All-ACC pick and an all-region second-teamer after starting 53 of 55 games and batted .289 with 13 doubles, 15 home runs and 35 RBIs.
“He had a lot of success while he was at Pitt,” Wild Things manager Tom Vaeth said. “I want him to go out and play his game. I need him to catch everything hit out his way, and, offensively, I need him to be a guy who is always on base … kind of like that gnat that always flying around your face just annoying you.”
