On Sports: Patric Hornqvist again engraved on Stanley Cup; ex-Pitt star arrested; waived Pirate starts for Dodgers

Patric Hornqvist twice was on Penguins teams that won the Stanley Cup, and his name has been engraved on the trophy a third time because he currently works for the champion Florida Panthers.

Former Pittsburgh Penguins fan favorite Patric Hornqvist has his name on the Stanley Cup for a third time.

The NHL’s “Keeper of the Cup,” Philip Pritchard, released a photo of the newly engraved chalice via social media over the weekend. And among the 53 of Florida Panthers players and staff whose names are freshly engraved are three former Penguins: Evan Rodrigues, Dmitry Kulikov and Patric Hornqvist.

Kulikov, a defenseman, appeared in just six games for the Penguins last season. Rodrigues spent parts of three seasons between 2020 and 2022 in black and gold, and he was prominent in last month’s Stanley Cup Final with four goals and three assists in seven games.

But Hornqvist is the most well-known among the ex-Penguins newly immortalized. He played in 407 regular-season and 66 postseason games over six seasons with the team from 2014-20. Most famously, he scored to break a scoreless tie with 1 minute, 35 seconds left in Game 6 of the 2017 Stanley Cup Final in Nashville. He raised the Cup for a second time that night, also part of the 2016 Cup winners the year before.

Traded to Florida in 2020, Hornqvist retired from playing last summer and moved into a front office role with the Panthers.

Addison arrested

Former Pitt star Jordan Addison was arrested Friday for suspicion of driving under the influence in Los Angeles, NFL.com reported Sunday.

Addison, who is about to enter his second season with the Minnesota Vikings, was allegedly spotted asleep behind the wheel of a white Rolls-Royce near Los Angeles International Airport as midnight approached Friday. He was in custody for less than two hours.

An All-American who won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s best wide receiver in 2021, Addison spent two seasons at Pitt but transferred to USC in May 2022. The Vikings took him with the 23rd overall pick in last year’s draft.

Addison was named to the Pro Football Writers Association’s all-rookie team after he had 70 receptions for 911 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Friday’s incident came a week shy of Addison being cited for speeding and reckless driving in Minnesota last July 20.

Sweet as Honey

The $231 million-payroll Los Angeles Dodgers have lost six of seven and eight of 11.

“Desperate times,” manager Dave Roberts was quoted by the AP as saying Sunday.

How desperate, exactly? Try, they were forced to start a pitcher who was waived two days earlier … by the Pirates.

Brent Honeywell Jr. pitched the first three innings of the Dodgers’ 4-3 loss Sunday at the Detroit Tigers. Honeywell had been designated for assignment by the Pirates on Friday to make room on the 26- and 40-man rosters for veteran lefty starter Marco Gonzales to come off the disabled list.

Honeywell did not allow a run, permitted one hit and no walks with two strikeouts in his Dodgers debut.

Honeywell, 29, had made only two appearances for the Pirates. He allowed one run on two hits and two walks in 2⅓ innings late in a 9-0 defeat at the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.

Honeywell spent most of the season with Triple-A Indianapolis after joining the Pirates organization via a minor-league contract in February. He’d appeared in 43 MLB games prior to this season, pitching for Tampa Bay, San Diego and the Chicago White Sox.

At the All-Star break, the Dodgers have six starting pitchers on the injured list. They remain on top of the National League West division at 56-41, the second-best record in the NL and seven games up on the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fore!

Patrick Peterson remains without an NFL team after the future Hall of Fame cornerback was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers in March. Over the weekend, he was holding his own in an entirely different sport.

Peterson placed 29th among a field of 90 at the American Century Championship, the annual celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe.

A three-time first-team All Pro who played a lone season with the Steelers, the 34-year-old Peterson was the highest-placing athlete with Pittsburgh ties in the tournament that most notably for local fans was won by Mario Lemieux in 1998.

Former Pitt star receiver Larry Fitzgerald placed 32nd, ex-Steelers Hall of Fame running back Jerome Bettis tied for 44th and former Steelers draft pick and Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel placed 55th. Longtime NFL kicker Robbie Gould — a Penn State alumnus — placed 30th.

Former tennis pro Mardy Fish won the event, and NHL veteran Joe Pavelski placed second. The tournament uses the modified Stableford scoring system.

Two former Pittsburgh pro athletes have been the most decorated participants at the Lake Tahoe event. Rick Rhoden, who pitched eight seasons for the Pirates, has won the tournament a record eight times. Dan Quinn, who spent parts of four seasons with the Penguins, has the second-most wins with five.
