Palmer Jackson was hoping to capture one of the biggest victories in his amateur career Saturday.
But University of Minnesota senior Ben Warian had other ideas.
Warian shot a 6-under-par 64 during the final round of the 70th Sunnehanna Amateur and walked away with the title by finishing with a 13-under 267.
University of Oklahoma junior Jase Summy finished second a shot back with a 12-under 268, and Jackson, the Franklin Regional and Notre Dame grad and Murrysville native, ended up third with an 11-under 269.
Summy shot a 3-under 67 during the final round and Jackson a 2-under 68 at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown.
Jackson started the final round with birdies on Nos. 1 and 3, but he bogeyed No. 6. On the back nine, Jackson had a birdie on No. 11, but a bogey on the par-3 No. 16 stopped his momentum.
He finished with a birdie on No. 18.
Jackson put himself in serious contention Friday by shooting a 7-under 63. He opened the tournament with a 1-over 71 and followed with a 3-under 67.
His Notre Dame teammate, Rocco Salvitti of Canonsburg, tied for 35th at 1-under 279. J.F. Aber of Sewickley finished tied for 53rd at 3-over 283, and Chuck Tragesser of Murrysville ended up 66th at 15-over.
