When Palmer Jackson gets hot, he’s one of the top golfers in the country.

The 2019 season was unbelievable for the Murrysville resident and 2019 Franklin Regional graduate. He shot 10 consecutive tournament rounds in the 60s. He continued his strong play in the fall at Notre Dame.

But the coronavirus spoiled the 2020 spring season for the Fighting Irish rising sophomore. A groin injury sidelined him in May.

Jackson is competing in the 114th Southern Amateur Championship this week and he followed his 3-over par 75 with a 2-over 74 on Thursday during the second round at Carrolton, Texas.

He is currently tied for 62nd with a 5-over 149. He is 13 shots behind the leader, William Mouw of Chino, Calif. Low 66 and ties advance to the final two rounds, so Jackson survived the cut and will play the final two rounds on Friday and Saturday.

Jackson had three birdies and five bogies during his round at Maridoe Golf Club.

This is the start of a busy time for Jackson, who competed in the Westmoreland County Amateur on Sunday before flying to Texas. Next week he’ll be in Johnstown for the Sunnehanna Amateur and the following week at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind., for the Western Amateur.

He’ll compete in the Pennsylvania State Amateur at Lookaway Golf Club in late July and the U.S. Amateur in Oregon in August.
