Palmer Jackson of Murrysville hits a tee shot during the first round of the Trip-State PGA 2020 Frank B. Fuhrer Jr. Invitational Monday, June 29, 2020 at the Pittsburgh Field Club.

The Notre Dame duo of Palmer Jackson (Murrysville) and Davis Chatfield just missed qualifying for the NCAA Division I Championships last week.

But they were able to get into the United States Golf Association’s Amateur Four-Ball at Chambers Bay, University Place, Wash.

Now they find themselves in the quarterfinals after taking out two prominent duos, the returning champions on Monday and another notable pair in the Round of 16.

Jackson and Chatfield defeated reigning champions Scott Harvery and Todd Mitchell in the Round of 32, 2-up. The Notre Dame pair survived an 11-teams-for-six-spots qualifier Sunday.

They rallied from 2-down early with Jackson using his length off the tee to rally the team.

Two other past U.S. Amateur Four-Ball champions didn’t fare any better in the Round of 16 on Tuesday morning as Jackson and Chatfield defeated Nathan Smith (Brookville) and Todd White, 3 and 2.

Now they face Luke Potter and Preston Summerhays in the afternoon quarterfinals.

“Nathan and I have (played together) a good bit, so we’re good friends,” Jackson said before the match with Smith. “But it will be pure competition (Tuesday).”
