With the Pittsburgh Penguins entering the offseason for a third consecutive year without a playoff appearance, TribLive will offer Penguins A to Z, a player-by-player look at all 56 individuals signed to an NHL contract — including those whose deals do not begin until future seasons — with the organization.
Starting with Noel Acciari and going on through to Philip Tomasino (regrettably, there is no Z on the payroll), every player will be profiled in alphabetical order.
This series is scheduled to be published Mondays through Saturdays leading up until June 24, four days before the start of the NHL Draft. In the event of a transaction, that schedule will be altered as necessary.

Acquired: Trade, Feb. 13, 2025
This season: A sixth-round draft pick (No. 169 overall) in 2018, Mathias Laferriere entered his fourth campaign with the Blues organization this past September needing to make some significant progress to show that he had a future with that organization.
A somewhat potent scorer at the junior level in the former Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Laferriere had yet to carry that offensive touch to the American Hockey League level.
Opening the season on the right wing of the Springfield Thunderbirds’ fourth line, Laferriere offered limited offensive contributions. In fact, his first goal of the season did not come until a 4-1 home win against the Hartford Wolf Pack on Nov. 30.

In total, Laferriere appeared in 33 games and posted 10 points (two goals, eight assists) for the Thunderbirds before he was traded to the Penguins. In a swap of mid-level prospects who needed a change of scenery, Laferriere was sent to the Penguins in exchange for forward Corey Andonovski.
Debuting on the left wing of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s fourth line, Laferriere offered more of the same from an offensive perspective, going seven games without a point before he pieced together a three-game goal-scoring streak beginning with a 7-1 road win against the Wolfpack on March 7.

Primarily deployed as a bottom-six forward after joining the Penguins, Laferriere skated in 22 games, starting 15 as a left winger and seven as a right winger. During that span, he scored eight points (three goals, five assists) while also being scratched for nine games.
During Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s two-game postseason run, Laferriere appeared in one game and was held without a point.
The future: Laferriere turns 25 on June 27 and while he is hardly an old man, he just doesn’t seem to offer enough to be in the future plans for an organization turning to youth, particularly at the American Hockey League level.
That’s an eleemosynary way of saying he probably won’t be re-signed.
Laferriere needed the cliched change of scenery. But it’s hard to tell what benefit it offered him.
