Penguins announce training camp roster
The Pittsburgh Penguins’ 2025 training camp roster looks a bit like what they hit the ice with in 2010.
Marc-Andre Fleury and (a) Brent Johnson are included along with mainstays such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang.
But Fleury is largely participating in this camp as a retirement send-off while Johnson is a reserve defenseman signed to an American Hockey League (AHL) contract (and not related to the popular backup goaltender who played for the club in the early part of the previous decade).
Crosby, Malkin and Letang are still around, but the likelihood of the Penguins building a Stanley Cup contender around that trio once again appears to have dissipated much like planking and the Harlem Shake.
On Wednesday, the team announced its roster for the upcoming training camp, which opens Thursday. It includes 69 players.

Notes:
• Forwards Noel Acciari, Rutger McGroarty, Tanner Howe and Bill Zonnon as well as defenseman Peyton Kettles will attend camp but are not medically cleared to participate.
The nature of whatever may be ailing them was not disclosed.
• Burke, Fabbri, Fleury, Livingstone and Murray are attending on professional tryout contracts (PTO).
Fleury’s inclusion is largely ceremonial as he officially retired after last season, following a spectacular 21-year career in the NHL. But as one of the most beloved players in franchise history, he is having something of a graceful goodbye as he will participate in a practice session Sept. 26, then a preseason contest at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sept. 27.
Fabbri, 29, is the most accomplished of the players signed to PTOs. A veteran of nine NHL seasons, he was a member of the St. Louis Blues’ Stanley Cup championship squad in 2019. Last season, the left-handed shot skated in 44 games for the Anaheim Ducks and scored 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) while averaging 16:12 of ice time per contest.
Murray, 27, has a handful of connections to the region, having played for Penn State at the NCAA level and the United States Hockey League’s (USHL) Youngstown Phantoms as a junior. A member of the Buffalo Sabres organization for the past four seasons, the left-hander appeared in 66 games for the AHL’s Rochester Americans and scored 49 points (27 goals, 22 assists) last season.
Burke, 28, has 10 games of NHL experience over the past three seasons with the Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights. The right-hander spent most of 2024-25 with Vegas’ AHL affiliate, the Henderson Silver Knights, posting 19 points (10 goals, nine assists) in 60 games.
Livingstone, 26, has five career games on his NHL resume, all as a member of the Nashville Predators during the 2022-23 season. Last season, as a member of Nashville’s AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals, the right-handed Livingstone scored 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) in 59 games.
• Ansons, Breazeale, Brickey, Budnick, Calvert, De St. Phalle, Edwards, Gallant, Gauthier, Graham, Huglen, Johnson, Klassen, McDonough, Pavlenko, Renwick and Urdahl are signed to AHL contracts.
