Penguins plan upgrades to PPG Paints Arena, including larger video board
The Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday announced plans to upgrade PPG Paints Arena for the 2023-24 season.
Construction at the facility will begin at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.
The upgrades include a new video board, touted to be double the size of the one that currently hangs over the ice surface, according to a statement from the team. A new LED ribbon boards, a sound system, control room and content management system also are to be included.
The most prominent upgrade will be two so-called “bunker” suites at ice level and a VIP event level club.
The “bunker” suites will provide dining and entertainment space, full-service bars and private restrooms.
The event level club will be situated in the end of the rink where the home team attacks offensively during the first and third periods. The space will be able to accommodate up to 300 people.
The price tag for the improvement will be “over $30 million,” according to the team. It will include financial support from the Sports and Exhibition Authority.
There was no word on how the changes may impact capacity. PPG Paints Arena can hold 18,187 for hockey.
The Penguins have called the arena home since 2010.
