Penguins assign forward Alex Nylander back to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
Alex Nylander keeps racking up the miles.
On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Penguins assigned the reserve forward to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL).
It marked the eighth time this season Nylander has been shuffled between the NHL and AHL rosters with every transaction happening since March 7.
On Thursday afternoon, Nylander was recalled under emergency condition only to be formally returned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton minutes before the opening faceoff of a 4-2 home win against the Minnesota Wild.
By Friday, Nylander was recalled, once again under emergency conditions as forward Drew O’Connor was hobbled by an undisclosed ailment.
Back in the lineup Saturday, Nylander scored the opening goal in a 5-1 road win against the Detroit Red Wings. It was his first NHL goal of the season and first at at the NHL level since March 11, 2020.
In seven NHL contests this season, Nylander has two points (one goal, one assist) while averaging 13:05 of ice time per contest.
An All-Star with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, Nylander has 50 points, including a team-best 25 goals, in 55 AHL games.
Nylander, 25, is signed to a one-year, two-way contract that carries a salary cap hit of $750,000.
