Pittsburgh Penguins rookie forward Avery Hayes was briefly assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Friday before being formally recalled tot eh NHL roster.
The team has not announced the transaction, but it was reflected on the AHL’s website.
In reality, the maneuver was a paper transaction that maintains’ Hayes’ eligibility for the AHL’s postseason. For players to remain eligible, they must be on an AHL affiliate’s roster by 3 p.m. Friday.
A right-handed shot, Hayes has appeared in six NHL games this season and has two goals while averaging 11:47 of ice time per contest.
At the AHL level, the 23-year-old Hayes has skated in 36 games and scored 30 points (19 goals, 11 assists).
Hayes is in the first year of a two-year entry-level contract with a salary cap hit of $830,000.
