With a handful of players on the verge of returning to the active roster, the Pittsburgh Penguins assigned rookie forward Sam Poulin to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Tuesday.
Goaltender Tristan Jarry and rookie forward Ville Koivunen are currently designated to injured reserve due to undisclosed ailments but are expected to be available for Wednesday’s home game against the Buffalo Sabres. In order for either of them to rejoin the active roster, at least one roster spot needed to be opened.
The Penguins recalled Poulin to the NHL club Nov. 18. In two games since the transaction, he did not record a point on two shots and averaged 13:49 of ice time per contest while largely operating on the left wing of the third line.
Despite having been on the NHL roster for more than a week, the left-handed Poulin remains Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s leading scorer this season with 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in 16 games.
Note: Defensive prospect Finn Harding was assigned from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to Wheeling of the ECHL.
