The Pittsburgh Penguins made a notable move with their training camp roster Monday morning, assigning goalie prospect Sergei Murashov to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.
Murashov, 20, is in the first year of a three-year entry-level contract worth $861,110 annually.
A native of Yaroslavl, Russia, Murashov is preparing to make his North American professional hockey debut after a handful of KHL games and several seasons in the Russian MHL junior league.
The Penguins selected him in the fourth round (No. 118 overall) of the 2022 draft.
Over the summer, he was a late addition to the Penguins’ prospect development camp, which marked his first visit to the United States.
Fluent in English, Murashov seemed to settle into new surroundings well.
With a solid performance at development camp, followed by his decision to turn pro and join the Penguins, Murashov rose in prominence among the organization’s more intriguing prospects.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton began its training camp Sept. 28, with its preseason running through Oct. 10.
The club returns goalie Joel Blomqvist to the fold after his own solid North American hockey debut last year.
Where Murashov lands on the organizational goalie depth chart still remains to be seen, but for now, the Penguins will continue his development in the minors.
