Pittsburgh Penguins assistant coach Mike Vellucci has been named to an identical position with the United States Men’s National Team for the upcoming International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) World Championship tournament.
USA Hockey announced Vellucci’s appointment along with other assistant coaches in a release on Tuesday.
A native of Northville, Mich., Vellucci has been part of the Penguins organization since 2019, including the past five seasons with the NHL club, primarily overseeing the forwards and penalty kill. He previously served as general manager and head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the 2019-20 season.
San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky is serving in the same capacity for the United States in this upcoming tournament.
The tournament will be staged primarily in Stockholm between May 9 and 25. Herning, Denmark, will also host games.
