Sam Lafferty’s trip to the AHL was a brief one.

Assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last Thursday as the Pittsburgh Penguins started to get healthy, the rookie forward was called back up Tuesday night.

With Patric Hornqvist on the injured list, the Penguins played Monday night in Boston with 12 healthy forwards. They had 11 for Tuesday’s practice in New Jersey because Evgeni Malkin sat out for what coach Mike Sullivan called “maintenance.”

Lafferty, a Hollidaysburg native, was effective in his first NHL stint, recording three goals, three assists and a plus-4 rating in 10 games.
