With Halloween around the corner, Sidney Crosby tested out a vintage look on Tuesday morning.

He resembled the 2013 version of Sidney Crosby.

Donning a protector for his jaw, Crosby participated in an optional morning skate at PPG Paints Arena hours before the Penguins took on the rival Philadelphia Flyers.

During the late stages of the second period in a 3-0 road win against the Dallas Stars on Saturday, Crosby was struck in the left side of his head by a slap shot from Kris Letang. As the period ended, he left the ice under his own power but did not return for the start of the third. He did eventually resume playing 2 minutes, 47 seconds into the period.

“It felt pretty flush,” said Crosby, who has some swelling on the left side of his face. “It might have. I didn’t feel it hit my helmet. That would have been nice.”

Crosby, who said he feels good after a “little scare,” indicated he plans on playing against the Flyers and was testing the shield to get acclimated with it.

“We’ll see,” he said. “That was why I was out there trying it. Seeing if I was going to use it or not.

“We’ll see if I end up using it. I don’t love it. So we’ll see.”

He previously wore a jaw protector during the 2013 postseason when he was struck in the face by a deflected shot from teammate Brooks Orpik late in the regular season. He suffered a broken jaw as a result of that incident.

“It’s hard to see a lot when you look down,” Crosby said of his previous experience wearing a protector. “That kind of thing. Just trying to see how you can protect it without really taking away from things too. Just trying to find a way there. We’ll see if I end up going with it or not.”

• In addition to Crosby, goaltenders Matt Murray, Tristan Jarry, forwards Sam Lafferty, Evgeni Malkin, defensemen Juuso Riikola, Chad Ruhwedel participated in the morning skate.

• Murray is scheduled to start.

• Brian Elliott is expected to start in net for the Flyers. In six games this season, Elliott has a 3-1-0 record along with a 2.28 goals against averaage and .926 save percentage.
