As he prepares to lead the U.S. men’s hockey national team at the upcoming 2025 4 Nations Face-Off, head coach Mike Sullivan will have some familiar faces on staff.

On Wednesday, David Quinn, soon to begin his first year under Sullivan with the Pittsburgh Penguins, was announced as an assistant coach for the U.S.

The Penguins hired Quinn as an assistant in mid-June, less than a month after Sullivan was named coach of the U.S. for the 4 Nations Face-Off, set to be played Feb. 12-20, 2025, in Boston and Montreal, with Canada, Finland and Sweden participating.

Quinn, 57, coached the San Jose Sharks from 2022-24 and the New York Rangers from 2018-21.

He led the U.S at the 2022 Winter Olympics, replacing Sullivan, who had originally been named coach until the NHL pulled out from participating in the games because of covid-19 pandemic.

Sullivan has since been tapped to lead the U.S. at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

Quinn’s relationship with Sullivan dates back to the 1980s, when they were teammates at Boston University.

Also joining Sullivan on his 4 Nations Face-Off staff is John Tortorella, coach of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Sullivan previously served as an assistant coach under Tortorella, 66, with the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks.

Rounding out Sullivan’s corps of assistants is Minnesota Wild coach John Hynes, who formerly served as assistant and later head coach of the American Hockey League’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
