Penguins defenseman Kris Letang placed on injured reserve
Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang has been placed on injured reserve due to an undisclosed ailment.
The six-time All-Star was injured during a 6-3 road loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday and was scratched the next day for a 3-2 home win against the Islanders.
Via audio provided by the Penguins’ media relations staff, coach Mike Sullivan told reporters in Detroit following a morning skate Tuesday that Letang was considered “day to day.”
Appearing in 34 games this season, the right-handed Letang has 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) while averaging 23:34 of ice time per contest, most among the team’s non-goaltenders.
In a corresponding transaction, defenseman Marcus Pettersson was activated from injured reserve.
Pettersson, a left-handed shot, has missed the past six games due to an undisclosed injury.
In 32 games this season, Pettersson has 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) while clocking an average of 21:48 of ice time per contest.
Forward Jesse Puljujarvi cleared waivers and remained on the roster as of Tuesday evening. Having gone unclaimed, he is eligible to be assigned to a minor league affiliate.
A right-handed shot, Puljujarvi has been a healthy scratch for the past nine games and 14 of the previous 15 contests. In the 21 games he has played, Puljujarvi has scored eight points (three goals, five assists) while averaging 11:37 of ice time per contest.
He is in the final year of a two-year contract with a salary cap hit of $800,000.
