A look at how players with connections to the Pittsburgh Penguins have done in the ongoing International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship Tournament:

Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson recorded the secondary assist on the game-winning goal for Sweden which opened the tournament with a 5-3 win against the United States in the preliminary round at Ostrava Arena in Vítkovice, Czechia on Friday.

Opening the contest on Sweden’s third pairing, Pettersson logged 17:01 of ice time on 27 shifts. Fellow Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson manned Sweden’s top pairing and recorded 20:56 of ice time on 26 shifts as well as two shots.

Penguins goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic was scratched for the United States.

Highlights:

The United States’ next contest is against Germany on Saturday, 2:20 p.m. EDT. Sweden’s next game is against Poland on Sunday, 2:20 p.m.

Skating on Finland’s top line, Penguins forward Valtteri Puustinen was held without a point in a 1-0 shootout loss to Czechia at the O2 Arena in Prague.

Puustinen had 18:26 of ice time on 24 shifts and recorded one shot on net.

Fellow Penguins forward Jesse Puljujarvi opened the contest on Finland’s second line and recorded 16:14 of ice time on 22 shifts. He was denied on his lone shootout attempt.

Finland’s next game is against Great Britain on Sunday, 6:20 a.m.
