In four seasons at Western Michigan, Penguins defensive prospect Cam Lee appeared in 137 games and scored 85 points (18 goals, 67 assists).

The Penguins have loaned defensive prospect Cam Lee to HC Slovan Bratislava of the Slovak Extraliga.

Lee, 23, joined the Penguins as an undrafted free agent March 17 when he signed a two-year entry-level contract. Last season, as a senior with Western Michigan of the NCAA, Lee appeared in 26 games and had 21 points (three goals, 18 assists).

According to a translated release from the team, Lee will return to North America once the Penguins open training camp. The NHL is targeting Jan. 1 as the start for its 2020-21 season.

The left-handed Lee is the sixth prospect signed to an NHL contract that the Penguins have a loan agreement with to a European team. He joins:

• Niclas Almari, defensemen with Pelicans — Liiga (Finland)

• Kasper Bjorkqvist, left winger with KooKoo — Liiga (Finland)

• Jan Drozg, left winger with HK Olimpija Ljubjana — Alps Hockey League (Slovenia)

• Jesper Lindgren, defensemen with MODO — HockeyAllsvensken (Sweden)

• Radim Zohorona, left winger with BK Mlada Boleslav — ELH (Czech Republic)

Like most prospects, Lee has not played a game since mid-March when leagues around the world halted play because of the coronavirus pandemic. His most recent game was an 8-4 home win with Western Michigan against Miami, Ohio on March 7.

While the NHL and most leagues in North America have yet to open the 2020-21 season, leagues in Europe have been playing for several weeks. As a result, NHL teams have loaned prospects to European teams to gain much-needed playing experience.

Lee is expected to be assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League once that league’s season opens.

Follow the Penguins all season long.
