A look at how members of the Pittsburgh Penguins are performing in the Winter Olympics:
Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson recorded a primary assist for Sweden, which defeated Latvia, 5-1, in a qualification playoff game at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena in Milan on Tuesday.
Karlsson’s assist happened on a goal by forward Filip Forsberg at 27:36 of the second period.
Opening the contest on the right side of Sweden’s third pairing, Karlsson logged 20:01 of ice time on 24 shifts and had four shots.
Penguins forward Rickard Rakell was held without a point for Sweden.
Beginning play on the right wing of the third line, Rakell registered 12:55 of ice time on 16 shifts and tallied one shot.
Sweden is scheduled to face the United States in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday, 3:10 p.m.
Penguins goaltender Arturs Silovs dressed as the backup goaltender in Tuesday’s game and did not play.
Playing in three games, Silovs finished the tournament with a 1-1 record, a 3.01 goals-against average and an .872 save percentage. Latvia finished in 10th place of the 12-team tournament.
