A look at how members of the Pittsburgh Penguins are performing in the Winter Olympics:
Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson and forward Rickard Rakell were each eliminated from the tournament as Sweden lost in overtime to the United States, 2-1, during a quarterfinal game at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena in Milan on Thursday.
Opening the contest on the right side of the third pairing, Karlsson was held without a point. Logging 27:26 of ice time on 31 shifts, Karlsson had five shots.
In five games during the tournament, Karlsson recorded five assists and averaged 21:06 of ice time per contest.
Rakell also went scoreless in Thursday’s contests. Beginning play on the right wing of the third line, Rakell clocked 9:53 of ice time on 13 shifts and tabulated one shot.
Throughout the tournament, Rakell had one assist in five games and averaged 11:56 of ice time per contest.
Sweden finished in seventh place in the 12-team tournament.
Penguins forward Sidney Crosby suffered an undisclosed injury while skating for Canada in a 4-3 overtime win against Czechia at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena.
Crosby left the contest during the second period. Canada coach Jon Cooper indicated Crosby was being evaluated but did not provide a substantive update on his status.
Before leaving the contest, Crosby logged 5:55 of ice time on nine shifts and did not record a point on two shots after opening play as center of the third line.
