Penguins’ Erik Karlsson, Rickard Rakell get assists in Sweden’s win over Italy

A look at how members of the Pittsburgh Penguins are performing in the Winter Olympics:

Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson and Rickard Rakell each recorded secondary assists for Sweden, which opened the preliminary round with a 5-2 win against Italy at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena in Milan on Wednesday.

Opening the contest on the top pairing, Karlsson had an assist on a power-play goal by forward Gabriel Landeskog at 9:06 of the first period. On 28 shifts, Karlsson logged 20:56 of ice time and recorded four shots.

Rakell opened the game on the left wing of the third line and tallied an assist on a goal by linemate Mika Zibanejad at 55:42 of the third period. In total, Rakell logged 13:17 of ice time on 17 shifts and recorded four shots.

Highlights.

Sweden’s next game is against Finland on Saturday, 6:10 a.m.
