William Horcoff, left, stands with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the NHL Draft on Friday in Los Angeles.

After trading the No. 12 overall selection in Friday’s NHL Draft to Philadelphia in exchange for the Nos. 22 and 31 picks, the Pittsburgh Penguins executed a second swap of draft picks to slide into No. 24.

With that pick, the Penguins chose Michigan Wolverines center Will Horcoff.

In order to select Horcoff, the Penguins traded their No. 31 pick, as well as No. 59 in the second round, to the Los Angeles Kings.

Horcoff, 18, is a 6-foot-4, 181-pound prospect who will be a sophomore at Michigan this fall.

As a freshman, he scored four goals with six assists in 18 games, having joined the Wolverines mid-season from the U.S. National Development Team. He was the youngest player in college hockey.

His father, Shawn Horcoff, played 1,008 NHL games from 2000-2016, primarily with the Edmonton Oilers.
