Penguins forward Brian Boyle undergoes knee surgery
Forward Brian Boyle underwent surgery on his left knee Monday, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced via a news release.
Boyle did not play in the Penguins’ season-ending Game 7 overtime loss at the New York Rangers on Sunday after he suffered an injury early during Game 6 on Friday. The team’s announcement estimated Boyle’s recovery time as six weeks, though with the Penguins’ season over and Boyle’s status as an unrestricted free agent, the timeframe carries little relevance.
Boyle, 37, appeared in 66 regular-season games and six playoff games this season for the Penguins after making the team as a camp tryout. Boyle went unsigned during the shortened 2020-21 season after playing 13 years in the NHL. The 6-foot-6, 245-pounder at this stage of his career fills a fourth-line role and as an effective penalty-killer. He had 11 goals and 10 assists during the regular season and two assists during the playoffs.
Boyle left Game 6 after taking only two shifts.
Team physician Dr. Dharmesh Vyas performed Boyle’s surgery in Pittsburgh, according to the Penguins.
