Penguins forward Colin White claimed off waivers by Montreal
Former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Colin White won’t have to go very far to find his new team, the Montreal Canadiens.
A few hours in advance of Thursday’s 7 p.m. puck drop at PPG Paints Arena between the Penguins and Canadiens, Montreal claimed White off waivers.
White, 27, was placed on waivers by the Penguins on Wednesday but participated in the club’s Thursday morning skate.
In the afternoon, Montreal scooped him up.
Per reports from members of the Canadiens media, White is expected to suit up and play against the Penguins Thursday evening.
Through 11 games with the Penguins this year, White had failed to record a point.
Deployed primarily as a bottom-six forward while playing a short clip on the Penguins’ second line with Evgeni Malkin, White averaged 9 minutes, 56 seconds of ice time per night.
The 21st overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft by Ottawa, White played parts of six seasons with the Senators before joining Florida last year, which he helped advance to the Stanley Cup, contributing eight goals and seven assists over 68 games.
Signed to a one-year deal with Pittsburgh last October, his departure hands the Penguins $775,000 in additional salary cap space.
Per Cap Friendly, the Penguins now have 48 NHL contracts on the books, two short of the league maximum.
