Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin trades jabs with the Ottawa Senators forward Brady Tkachuk during Monday’s game at PPG Paints Arena.

Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin was fined $5,000 by the NHL for high sticking Ottawa Senators forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau during the Penguins’ 5-2 win at PPG Paints Arena on Monday.

With 20 seconds remaining in regulation, Senators forward Brady Tkachuk and Malkin began wrestling on Ottawa’s end boards and were quickly joined by their teammates. After officials had dissolved the initial scrum, Pageau shoved the left side of Malkin’s head. Malkin responded by swiping his stick with his right arm toward Pageau’s head.

That touched off another sequence of wrestling which took several moments for officials to break up.

Pageau was fined $2,500 for roughing Malkin during the sequence.

The NHL announced the fines via Twitter and indicated the dollar amounts of Malkin’s punishment was the maximum allowable under the terms of the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement with the NHLPA.
