In 64 games last season, Penguins forward Kevin Hayes scored 23 points (13 goals, 10 assists).

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Kevin Hayes will be sidelined due to an undisclosed injury to begin the regular season.

Coach Dan Muse announced Hayes’ status on Friday indicating he will be reevaluated in approximately one month.

The Penguins are scheduled to open the regular season with a road contest against the New York Rangers on Oct. 7.

Hayes was injured during the first day of training camp on Thursday after being on the wrong end of a collision with defenseman Ryan Graves. Crashing into the boards, Hayes appeared to be cautious with his left arm or shoulder as he received assistance while leaving the ice.

A left-handed shot, the 33-year-old Hayes appeared in 64 games for the club last season and scored 23 points (13 goals, 10 assists) while averaging 12:03 of ice time per contest. He is entering the final year of a contract and accounts for $3,571,429 of salary cap space on the Penguins’ books.

Note: A pair of injured forwards, veteran Noel Acciari (core muscle) and Tanner Howe (right knee), skated prior to practice on Friday.
