Penguins forward Nick Bonino scored the United States’ opening goal in a 4-3 overtime win against Sweden in a preliminary round game at Tampere, Finland, on Tuesday.

Skating as the United States’ top center, Bonino logged 18:09 of ice time on 26 shifts, had three shots and was 13 for 23 (56.5%) on faceoffs.

Penguins forward Drew O’Connor, primarily deployed as the United States’ second center, recorded 16:33 of ice time on 21 shifts, had three shots and was 11 for 17 (64.7%) on faceoffs.

Penguins goaltender Casey DeSmith made 23 saves on 26 shots and remained unbeaten (4-0-0) in the tournament.

For Sweden, Penguins forward Alex Nylander clocked 15:16 of ice time on 20 shifts and had one shot.

Highlights:

The United States finished the preliminary round with a 7-0-0 record and will face Czechia in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, 9:20 p.m. (EDT).

As for Sweden (6-0-1), it will meet Latvia in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, 1:20 p.m. (EDT).

Penguins defenseman P.O Joseph logged 19:36 of ice time on 25 shifts for Canada in a 3-1 win against Czechia at Arena Riga in Riga, Latvia.

Highlights:

Canada (5-1-1) will face Finland in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, 9:20 p.m. (EDT).

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins forward Justin Addamo clocked 12:46 of ice time on 19 shifts for France in a 5-0 loss to Germany at Nokia Arena.

Deployed as France’s second-line center, Addamo, a Robert Morris product, was 7 for 10 (70.0%) in faceoffs.

Former Penguins forward prospect Frederik Tiffels scored Germany’s second goal.

Highlights:

France finished the tournament with a 1-2-4 record. In seven games, Addamo had two goals and 12 penalty minutes.
