Penguins forward Sidney Crosby has skated for Canada in the 2010 and 2014 Olympic tournaments.

LAS VEGAS — Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby and defenseman Erik Karlsson were named to the rosters of Canada and Sweden, respectively, for the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off tournament that will be held next season.

The NHL announced the first six selections for the rosters of Canada, Sweden, the United States and Finland on Friday. Complete rosters will be named at a later date.

In addition to their considerable NHL resumes, Crosby and Karlsson are each accomplished on the international stage.

Serving as Canada’s captain, Crosby has led Canada to gold medals in the 2010 and 2014 Olympic tournaments as well as first-place finishes in the International Ice Hockey Federation’s World Championship tournament in 2015 and the NHL’s World Cup tournament in 2016.

Karlsson was a member of Sweden’s team which won silver (and lost to Crosby and Canada) in the 2014 Olympics. Additionally, he has won bronze medals in the 2010 and 2024 IIHF World Championship tournaments.

In May, it was announced Penguins coach Mike Sullivan will serve as head coach of the United States.

The 4-Nations Faceoff, a round-robin tournament, is scheduled to be held in Boston and Montreal next season, Feb. 12-20, and will replace the All-Star Game.

Follow the Penguins all season long.
