Penguins forward Sidney Crosby named to Order of Canada
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby received an honor Thursday.
Perhaps more appropriately, an honour, given where it came from.
Crosby was named as an officer to the Order of Canada, one of that country’s most prominent awards, which recognizes individuals across various aspects of society who have made ample contributions to Canada.
An officer in the Order is the second-highest civilian honor for merit.
A native of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, Crosby was one of 99 individuals named to the Order for 2022.
In a release from Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, Crosby was recognized “for being one of the greatest hockey players of all time and for supporting community service initiatives for youth.”
The 35-year-old Crosby has represented Canada on numerous occasions in international tournaments, including the 2010 and 2014 Olympics when he led his team to gold medals.
Beyond his on-ice accomplishments, Crosby has supported hockey-related initiatives in his home province, including:
• Hockey Nova Scotia Black Youth Ice Hockey Program
• Hockey Nova Scotia Indigenous Female Hockey Academy
• Hockey Nova Scotia–ISANS (Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia) New Canadians Hockey Program
