The Penguins are expected to start goaltender Matt Murray for Tuesday’s exhibition game against the Philadelphia Flyers in Toronto.

The Penguins are expected to split the goaltending duties between Matt Murray and Tristan Jarry for Tuesday’s exhibition game against the Philadelphia Flyers at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

Coach Mike Sullivan said Murray will start and play the first half of the game while Jarry is scheduled to replace him at approximately the midway point in the second period.

After approximately two weeks of training camp, including a few scrimmages, Sullivan indicated his assessment of Murray and Jarry remains status quo.

“My opinion has not changed of our guys,” Sullivan said from Toronto via video conference. “These guys have a significant body of work with the Penguins organization and with this coaching staff. We know what they’re capable of. What we’re trying to do with each and every one of our guys is to allow our guys the opportunity to go through this process to capture their game. This is a unique circumstance. Our goaltenders are no different than any other player on our team in that regard.”

Notes:

• Sullivan suggested the availability of forward Sidney Crosby will be determined in the afternoon. Crosby abruptly left a scrimmage in Cranberry on July 18 because of an undisclosed ailment. He has practiced twice with his teammates since then but did not participate in any subsequent scrimmages.

“We’re going to allow Sid to go through his game-day routine,” Sullivan said. “Obviously, a (4 p.m.) game makes it a little bit more challenging. But we’ll make a decision on Sid sometime this afternoon on whether or not he’s going to play. Other than that, our full lineup will be in.”

• Forward Jake Guentzel was formally activated from injured reserve and is expected to be in the lineup for the first time since he suffered a serious right shoulder injury Dec. 30.

• This will be the Penguins’ first game in 140 days. Their most recent contest was a 5-2 road win against the New Jersey Devils on March 10. Sullivan remarked on the significance of Tuesday’s game, even if it is an exhibition.

“What I have thought about is the importance of sports during a difficult time and how passionate people are around their respective sports and the role that we play in society,” Sullivan said. “I also think about the huge undertaking the league has attempted to pull together here. Having spent a couple of days now in the hub city and the (quarantined zone), I’m so impressed with the organization and the attention to detail with what the league has gone through to try to keep our players safe and our coaches safe and everyone involved safe. And at the same time, allow the spirit of competition to take place. I think sports play an important role in our society. For me, this is an important moment for our league and our game and maybe most importantly, our fans.”

• The Penguins will be designated as the road team for this contest.

• Locally, the game will be broadcast on AT&T SportsNet.
