Pittsburgh Penguins rookie goaltender Artur Silovs is scheduled to start Sunday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens at PPG Paints Arena.
Coach Dan Muse announced Silovs’ status approximately two hours prior to the opening faceoff.
In 15 games this season, Silovs has a 4-5-6 record, a 3.26 goals-against average, an .887 save percentage and one shutout.
Silovs has not won since a 5-3 home victory against the Washington Capitals on Nov. 6. Since then, he has lost seven consecutive starts (0-3-4).
In parts of four seasons, Silovs has never faced the Canadiens in his career.
Notes:
• Per Muse, defenseman Jack St. Ivany will return to the lineup in place of defenseman Connor Clifton.
In two games this season, St. Ivany has no points and has averaged 16 minutes, 20 seconds of ice time, predominantly on the third defensive pairing.
• The Penguins enter the contest on an eight-game losing streak (0-4-4).
• The Penguins lost to the Canadiens, 4-0, on Saturday at Montreal’s Bell Centre.
• The Penguins have been shut out in consecutive games, including a 4-0 road loss to the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.
In 58 seasons, the Penguins have never been shut out in three consecutive games.
In total, the current Penguins have gone 120:14 without a goal. They still have a ways to go before approaching the franchise record for longest shutout sequence against (170:29). The 1973-74 team set that mark.
• Penguins defenseman Brett Kulak has 99 career assists.
• The Canadiens are expected to start goaltender Jakub Dobes. In 19 games this season, Dobes has a 12-5-2 record, a 2.91 GAA and an .893 save percentage.
Dobes has never played the Penguins in his career.
• The Canadiens placed forward Jake Evans (knee) on injured reserve and recalled forward Samuel Blais from Laval of the American Hockey League.
• The scheduled referees are Mike Sullivan (No. 47) and Brian Pochmara (No. 16), while the linesmen are Kilian McNamara (No. 93) and Ryan Jackson (No. 84).
