Penguins goaltender Sergei Murashov to start against Mammoth
Pittsburgh Penguins rookie goaltender Sergei Murashov is scheduled to start Sunday’s game against the Utah Mammoth at PPG Paints Arena.
Coach Dan Muse announced Murashov’s status approximately two hours before the opening faceoff.
In four NHL contests this season, Murashov has a 1-1-1 record, a 1.90 goals-against average, a .913 save percentage and one shutout.
He has never faced the Mammoth before.
The Penguins recalled Murashov from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) under emergency roster conditions. At the AHL level, Murashov has appeared in 11 games this season and has posted an 8-2-0 record, a 1.56 goals-against average, a .943 save percentage and two shutouts.
Notes:
• Penguins defenseman Brett Kulak and goaltender Stuart Skinner remain unavailable approximately 48 hours after they were acquired in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.
Both players are currently carrying a non-roster designation as they work through the byzantine process of clearing their immigration status. Kulak and Skinner are each Canadian nationals and have never previously played for an NHL team based in the United States.
• Penguins forward Sidney Crosby (1,721 points) trails the iconic Mario Lemieux (1,723) by two points for the franchise’s all-time lead in career scoring.
• Mammoth forward Logan Cooley, a native of West Mifflin, is on injured reserve due to an undisclosed malady that is expected to keep him sidelined until at least late January.
• Mammoth forward Nick Schmaltz has 298 career assists.
• With the contest scheduled to start at 3:08 p.m., neither team held a morning skate.
• The scheduled referees are Carter Sandlak (No. 29) and Francis Charron (No. 6), while the linesmen are Jonathan Deschamps (No. 80) and Shawn Oliver (No. 66).
