Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry expected to start against Capitals
The Pittsburgh Penguins are expected to start goaltender Tristan Jarry in Thursday’s home game against the Washington Capitals at PPG Paints Arena.
Jarry was the first goaltender to leave the ice following Thursday’s morning skate. That is typically an indicator of which goaltender will start.
In 42 games this season, Jarry has an 18-19-4 record, a 2.61 goals against average, a .910 save percentage and a league-best six shutouts.
Throughout his career, Jarry has faced the Capitals in 12 games and has posted a 6-4-1 record, 3.02 goals against average, a .904 save percentage and two shutouts.
Notes:
• Penguins forwards Noel Acciari and Jansen Harkins were each labeled as game-time decisions by coach Mike Sullivan.
Typically stationed on the fourth line, Acciari and Harkins each missed Tuesday’s 5-3 home win against the Columbus Blue Jackets due to their maladies.
Acciari was one of the first players to leave the ice following Tuesday’s morning skate while Harkins was one of the last. Typically, that is an indicator of which players might dress in a game.
Rookie forwards Jonathan Gruden and Joona Koppanen both left the ice before Harkins.
• Penguins forward Drew O’Connor will remain sidelined as a result of a concussion he suffered on Tuesday.
• Penguins forward Jake Guentzel, currently designated to long-term injured reserve, participated in the morning skate, albeit in a non-contact capacity.
He is not eligible to rejoin the Penguins’ lineup until Sunday.
• Guentzel and injured forward Bryan Rust each worked out on the ice before the morning skate. Rust is currently designated to regular injured reserve.
• While the team staged a full morning skate, it only lasted approximately eight minutes.
• Penguins forward Rickard Rakell has played in 699 career games.
Before their morning skate on Tuesday, the Capitals traded defenseman Joel Edmundson to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a third-round draft pick in 2024 and a fifth-round pick in 2025.
• Capitals goaltender Darcy Kuemper (illness) was labeled as a game-time decision by coach Spencer Carbery. In 29 games this season, Kuemper has a 13-12-3 record, a 3.15 goals against average, an .893 save percentage and one shutout.
Throughout his career, Kuemper has faced the Penguins in nine games and has posted a 4-4-1 record, a 3.08 goals against average and a .910 save percentage.
If Kuemper is unavailable, Charlie Lindgren would presumably get the start. This season, Lindgren has played in 30 games and has a 13-10-5 record, a 2.86 goals against average, a .906 save percentage and three shutouts.
Lindgren’s lone career game against the Penguins came this season. During a 4-0 home loss at Capital One Arena in Washington, Lindgren made 31 saves on 35 shots.
• The Capitals recalled goaltender Hunter Shepard from Hershey of the American Hockey League. In four NHL games this season, Shepard has a 2-1-1 record, a 3.19 goals against average and an .894 save percentage.
• Capitals defenseman Martin Fehervary has been ruled out due to an undisclosed injury.
