Penguins starting goaltender Tristan Jarry will be sidelined indefinitely due to an undisclosed injury.
His status was announced by head coach Mike Sullivan on Saturday to media in Boston. Sullivan did not offer a specific timeframe for Jarry’s recovery other than to label it as “week to week.”
The Penguins have not detailed the nature of Jarry’s injury other than to indicate it is “lower body.”
During Thursday’s 6-3 home win against the New York Islanders, Jarry appeared to be favoring the right leg portion of his lower body after Islanders forward Anders Lee tripped and slid into him midway through the third period.
Jarry, a two-time All-Star, has appeared in 58 games this season and has a 34-18-6 record, a 2.42 goals against average, a .919 save percentage and four shutouts.
In his absence, the Penguins will turn to backup goaltender Casey DeSmith, starting with Saturday’s road game against the Boston Bruins.
DeSmith has appeared in 21 games this season and has an 8-4-6 record, a 2.94 goals against average, a .906 save percentage and two shutouts.
On Friday, the Penguins recalled reserve goaltender Louis Domingue from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) under emergency conditions.
Domingue has appeared in one NHL contest this season. During a 2-1 road win against the San Jose Sharks on Jan. 14, Domingue made 40 saves on 41 shots in the victory.
With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Domingue has played in 22 games and has a 10-9-4 record, a 2.41 goals against average and a .924 save percentage.
Before that transaction, the Penguins had $11,861 of salary cap space to operate with according to Cap Friendly. However, a roster emergency exemption permits teams without sufficient salary cap space to summon a goaltender to their NHL roster should they face the possibility of not being able to dress two for a contest.
