Penguins in playoff position with 3 games left, with Capitals, Red Wings, Flyers close behind
Less than a week remains in the NHL’s regular season, and the chase for the final playoff spots in the Eastern Conference remain up for grabs.
By gaining two points in an overtime win over Detroit on Thursday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins moved into the second wild-card spot. The Penguins have three games remaining as they try to hold off the Capitals, Red Wings and Flyers for a berth in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Here’s a look at what remains for each team in the hunt in the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference.
NEW YORK ISLANDERS
Record: 37-27-15, 89 points
Where they stand: Third place in the Metropolitan standings
Remaining games: at Rangers (Saturday), at New Jersey (Monday), vs. Penguins (Wednesday)
Notable: With an 8-2 mark in their last 10 games, the Islanders have vaulted into a top-three spot in the Metro and are in playoff position. They have won six straight games after an overtime triumph over Montreal on Thursday and control their own destiny for the playoffs.
PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
Record: 37-30-12, 86 points
Where they stand: Second place in the Eastern Conference wild-card standings
Remaining games: vs. Boston (Saturday), vs. Nashville (Monday), at Islanders (Wednesday)
Notable: The Penguins earned a point for the 10th straight game with an overtime win over Detroit on Thursday. All three of their remaining opponents are currently in playoff position.
WASHINGTON CAPITALS

Where they stand: Third place in the Eastern Conference wild-card standings
